The Streets of Buckhead Will Open March 2010! Construction Contracts Being Renegotiated

The bad news is that The Streets of Buckhead will not open in November 2009 as planned. The VERY good news is that The Streets of Buckhead will still open but will be delayed until March 2010. This will be the biggest luxury project in Atlanta’s history, a $1.5 billion dollar high-end luxury project.

According to the AJC On Friday, Carter said he’ll use the construction slowdown to renegotiate contracts and potentially reap millions of dollars of savings.

“Rather than just continuing on, we’re going to sit down with our [subcontractors] and sharpen up our pencils and see where the market is today versus 2007 when we originally priced it,” said Carter on a phone interview from Jacksonville.

Balfour Beatty Construction, the general contractor, will meet with six or seven subcontractors next week to try and negotiate lower costs, said Jeff George, vice president of Balfour Beatty’s Atlanta commercial group.

Extending the deadline gives Ben Carter Properties several weeks to try to adjust prices, George said.

With material cheaper than it used to be, renegotiating costs is “a trend across the country,” George said. “The ‘07 prices aren’t in line with what the 2010 rents will be.”

Celebrate The Trumpet Awards 2009!

Celebrities will be out in full force to attend the Trumpet Awards this week-end! This year's 17th annual Trumpet Awards will be hosted by Sherri Shepherd, co-host of The View and Anthony Anderson, actor Law & Order.

My wife (CR) and I are excited that European Artist, Petra Azar will be introducing The United Heart to select Honorees and guests for the Trumpet Awards. Stay tuned to learn who received a United Heart!
What the United Heart Represents?

Petra Azar is a European sculptor creating through her art a language that is spoken from
soul to soul…. The inaudible language of Love.

Her talismanic amulets are deeply rooted in symbolism… Metaphors of hope, they reflect Petra’s unshakable belief in the ‘magnetic Power of Love’.

She began to develop her United Heart concept in 2006, in an attempt to create a global symbol that would celebrate the ideals of Unity. A symbol for a new era and a time where new and better values will rule.

“ Dr. Martin Luther King said …“ Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world a better place ”… I have deeply felt his calling and created the United Heart as a Symbol of Love and Unity… Yet, with the election of our new President, Barack Obama, we all are called to work together, to create a better world for all of us.

History has caught up with my endeavor to create a gentle reminder to love ourselves and to find pride in our own strength, while finding satisfaction in reaching out to our brothers and sisters… beyond family and friends… to those we may never know.

Yes… We Are ONE! Together we will alleviate racism, poverty and bigotry.
Together we will re-discover our ability to find great satisfaction in small acts of kindness.
Together we will learn again how beautiful it is to share in the wealth of what is given to us, while remaining ambitious in the pursuit of our own happiness.” - Petra Azar -
I offer you Peace.
I offer you Love
I offer you friendship
I hear your need
I feel your feelings
Let us work together for Unity and Love

- Mahatma Gandhi -

About the Trumpet Awards

Black men and women are a valuable resource to this country. Their contributions and accomplishments, including the part they play to ensure the continued vitality of the nation’s economy, have become increasingly evident.

Originally presented by Turner Broadcasting in 1993 and now presented by the Trumpet Awards Foundation, Inc., the Trumpet Awards were created to herald the accomplishments of Black Americans who have succeeded against immense odds. Special recognition is given to the few, who symbolize the many, who have overcome the ills of racism and poverty and achieved special greatness.

The past award presentations have been very successful and the future productions will continue to enhance the level of excellence created by the first Trumpet Awards.

Here are the Five Best Streets to Call Home in Atlanta’s Buckhead District

When it comes to the most luxury parts of Atlanta the Buckhead district is without question the top location. High-end luxury is alive and well in Buckhead! While other parts of the nation are suffering the Buckhead economy is still booming.

As listed in Wikipedia According to Forbes Magazine, Buckhead is home to the 9th wealthiest zip code in the nation--30327, with a household income in excess of $341,000 per year and is the location of the wealthiest of Atlanta's neighborhoods. Home to the Governor Mansion the area's real estate market is also the most expensive in the state of Georgia with an average home value in 2005 of approximately $761,000.[2][3][4] Claiming two of the nation's fourteen Mobil five-star restaurants — Seeger's and The Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, publications often refer to Buckhead as the "Beverly Hills of the South," and Robb Report magazine has consistently ranked it one of the nation's "10 Top Affluent Communities" for "some of the most beautiful mansions, best shopping and finest restaurants in the Southeastern United States".[5][6][7][8][9] Buckhead is also an internationally renowned shopping district with more than 1,400 retail units where shoppers spend more than $1 billion a year.[10]

So, what do you do when in Buckhead? There is so much happening ALL of the time I find the site buckhead.net a very resourceful tool to learn more about Buckhead. However, I could not refer you to the best five streets in Buckhead without schooling you about Buckhead and what it represents first.

Wes Vawter over at Atlanta Fine Homes gives his insight on what he believes to be the top five streets in Buckhead.

Cherokee Road ~ I like every house on the street.

Vernon Road ~ It is a nice, quiet street with beautiful homes.

Tuxedo Road ~ Stately homes with nice lots.

Andrews Drive ~ Lovely and stately homes On pretty lots.

Manor Ridge ~ Smaller cottage type homes and lots. The street has big old trees and every home has personality and charm.

Check it out for yourself and let me know if you believe theses are the best streets of Buckhead? For me Tuxedo Road is my favorite!

What Surprise! Michelle Obama Wears Isabel Toledo Again

When it comes to fashion our First Lady certainly did not take any chances. Mrs. Obama selected to wear a sparkling gold sheath dress with matching coat by Cuban-born American designer Isabel Toledo. She had previously designed a flowing gown that Michelle Obama wore to a fundraiser in Manhattan. Which Mrs. Obama wore a necklace by Tom Binns for the occasion. Also Toledo designed other dresses for Mrs. Obama.

Toledo was honored in September of 2008 by The Couture Council of The Museum at FIT.
Holy Toledo! Isabel Toledo and the Art of Fashion, opening June 19, 2009 through September 26, 2009. The exhibition will feature several key Toledo looks dating back to 1985 as well as illustrations by Ruben Toledo.

Atlanta Hip Hop Stars Celebrate Obama’s Victory – Young Jeezy Releases “My President” Video

Hip Hop is BIG and even bigger in the ATL! Actually this is where you come if you want to get put ON in the music industry. Today being a historic day in history I thought it would be fitting to highlight Young Jeezy’s new video release “My President” which is homage to soon to be titled “President” Barack Obama.

This video takes us back to Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” where the community comes together for a common cause. Other hip hop artists featured include Nas, Bow Wow, Bun B, DJ Greg Street and Jeezy's artist Roccett.

MTV, reports True to Jeezy's description, the video reminds you in part of Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," in which the whole community comes out for a common cause.

"I did the video with the 'Fight the Power' concept because I remember, back in the day, Flavor Flav and Chuck D marching down the street," Jeezy told us in December. "They had the old people, the young people, store owners, they had picket signs, everything. It was a sense of black pride, a sense of pride, period."

What is seemingly so touching in my opinion is that Jeezy shot the video at Ebenezer Baptist Church which was also the church of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A revolution of combining history through a combination what makes a legacy.

Is this video hot? Will Atlanta play a major role in politics?

François & Co. Makes Luxury Antique Looking Stone an Eco Option over Quarry

The greener you make your home the better you make the environment. However, most of the time the problem remains in finding a green solution that will not sacrifice luxury, style, or beauty. Especially, if you are like me a true lover of supreme southern charm and only demand classic traditional luxury.

When I learned that there was an Atlanta company that actually had a solution for this problem I had to introduce them to you! According to Penny Bonda over at Interior Design, François & Co., an Atlanta-based fabricator has found a way to create an environmentally friendly product without sacrificing luxury, style, or beauty.

Antique-looking Scagliola Stone has the look and feel of quarry stone; however, it is actually a blend made from crushed travertine, limestone, or marble, which allows nearly identical replicas of timeless French designs to be made without disturbing diminishing rock quarries.

The crushed stone fragments come from demolition and manufacturing waste streams. They are formed into a thick clay base, mixed with color, and poured into painstakingly detailed molds. In addition to the eco-friendly Scagliola Stone, François & Co. also offers a collection of hand-carved mantelpieces made with reclaimed limestone salvaged from the rubble of demolished French estates.

François & Co., from the very first day of their operation, says a company representative, has been dedicated to producing the highest level of product while having as little negative impact on the earth as possible. A number of green showcase homes have featured its products including “Eco-Manor,” the entirely green private residence of Ted Turner’s daughter in Atlanta.

Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta Dismisses DeShawn Snow from Cast

Sadly to report that it is official our low key Atlanta housewife was given her walking papers by Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta. Apparently Snow did not bring enough drama to be a real housewife for Atlanta, she was just too normal.

According to TV Watch, DeShawn Snow, the most reserved cast member on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta, will not be returning for the season’s second season, she tells Essence.com.

“One of the producers called me yesterday and said that they wouldn’t take my option,” Snow tells the site. The reason the producer gave for letting her go, she says, is she was “too human for a circus show.”

“It wasn’t my decision,” Snow says. “They let me go and there are no hard feelings. I am thankful for the opportunity.”

But the decision did come as a surprise. “I was shocked because I just talked to [the producers] in December about the new season,” Snow says.

The rest of the RHOA cast — Kim Zolciak, NeNe Leakes, Sheree Whitfield and Lisa Wu Hartwell — are all expected to return for the second season.

“Bravo is bringing Atlanta back for season two but we haven’t confirmed the cast at this time,” a Bravo rep tells PEOPLE.

“At the end of the day, I was the same person throughout the show,” says Snow. “I never changed. I was authentic and true to myself and I can’t control what other people do.”

On that note all I can say to Bravo is, when Girlfriends did not return their entire cast, they were cancelled. YOU do know that Real Housewives of Atlanta is a reality for a Girlfriends replacement. If NOT Bravo to YOU!

Atlanta’s Friend in Diamond Business Files Chapter 11

The Shane Co. operating four stores in metro Atlanta, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, The Centennial, Colo.-based jeweler listed assets and debt of between $100 million and $500 million on documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Denver on Monday. It said it had between 5,000 and 10,000 creditors.

Shane Co. owes $26 million to its 20 largest creditors alone, according to a court filing. Dison Gems of New York, which is owed $4.7 million, is the company’s largest unsecured creditor.

Denver attorney Caroline Fuller, of Fairfield and Woods PC, who represents Shane Co., said the current economy and the state of the luxury goods retail market put the diamond merchant in a cash crunch. She said the company hoped to emerge from Chapter 11 by year's end.

Founded in 1971, Shane Co. currently operates 23 stores in 14 states, including stores in Alpharetta, Duluth, Kennesaw and Morrow, Ga. In its advertising and on its Web site, the company calls itself “your friend in the diamond business.” It says that customers pay “no middleman markup” because the company buys its diamonds and gems directly from cutters in Belgium, Israel, Thailand and India.

I truly hope that The Shane Co. recovers like Delta Airlines! It is really important that we support our local businesses! Please shop The Shane Co.!!

Atlanta’s Luxury Recession Eating – 20 Places to Eat Under $25

Well, for those of you who like the finer things in life and only eat the finest we got you covered. However, everyone can use a little savings tip during these economic downtimes. I ran across an article by Christiane Lauterbach over at Atlanta Magazine that I thought everybody should read.

You see Lauterbach checked out where to find “Twenty Great Meals Under $25” in metro Atlanta and gave us the 411. I must admit Lauterbach absolutely nailed it. For that reason I want to pass these hot tips on to Top Atlanta Luxury readers.

THE CHOCOLATE BAR While we suggest a sampling from across the menu, if you skip the savories entirely you can enjoy the world-class three-course dessert menu prepared by the former pastry chef at Seeger’s in this deceptively casual establishment. Come back with more money and get wine pairings or culinary cocktails with your sweets. What to order: Madras curry popcorn ($3); cheese plate with seasonal preserves and raisin bread ($13); chocolate pot de crème with Szechuan cocoa nib crisps ($5).201 West Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, 404-378-0630, http://www.thechocolatebardecatur.com/

New Show for Atlanta Housewife NeNe, Sheree Whitfield Divorce Settlement Disappointment

One Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta wife is sporting a HOT new look! NeNe Leakes looks absolutely fabulous these days. Rumors fly that NeNe is getting her own show and recently was photographed by celebrity photographer Derek Blanks.

On the downside, Sheree Whitfield received a diva blow! According to the AJC, sources from the transcript from Fulton County Superior Court, Georgia Supreme Court records reveal.

Sheree’s settlement:

Primary custody of their two children
$2,142 a month in child support
Two cash payments totaling $775,000
$250,000 share of his NFL Player 401(k) plan
Shares of three other NFL retirement plans
2006 Range Rover Sport

Sheree Whitfield is appealing Westmoreland’s judgment, saying she deserves alimony. Attorneys for both parties will argue the case before the Georgia Supreme Court on Monday.

Her Claim:

She should be awarded alimony because of her lack of education and her inability to earn enough income to find affordable housing in the same school district where their children’s friends and classmates live.

Atlanta’s Fashion Statement: The Hottest Fashion Designers Big Moves

The city of Atlanta is a perfect fit to woo and wow fashion designers. Somebody said Atlanta is HOT and the trend for HOT Atlanta was born. No wonder the fashion elite and major brands are targeting Atlanta as one of the hottest spots to market their products.

When it comes to fashion metro Atlanta is blazingly hot! All eyes are on Atlanta from established brands to high profile design schools. Atlanta is setting the next fashion trends and this success has returned major spotlight attention for three Atlanta fashion designers.

Mychael Knight: Fashion on the Small Screen
The world first learned of Mychael Knight (then "Michael") when he appeared on the third season of Bravo's fashion reality competition show, Project Runway. The designer got his start as a fashion design major before interning at an Atlanta boutique. Though he didn't win the show's top prize, Knight gained national exposure and attention for his street chic designs. Today, the designer is back in Atlanta, working on his next collection.

Simpson: Style on Stage

Though R&B fans around the world are familiar with singer/songwriter India Arie, they may not realize the talent that runs in her family. Arie's mother, Joyce Simpson, is an Atlanta fashion designer with her own talent for singing. Simpson spent much of her young life singing, opening for Stevie Wonder and Al Green. Though India Arie took some accessories classes at a local fashion design school, she turned to singing, while her mother ended up in fashion design and is now an established local designer. Simpson also serves as her daughter's personal stylist, and accompanies her on tour.

Anne Barge: Fashion Down the Aisle

An established name in Atlanta fashion, Anne Barge designs beautiful bridal gowns under her own label. Barge, who uses museum-quality beading and embroidery on fine silk gowns, has established an international presence with Saks Fifth Avenue. She set up a bridal store in London for British mogul Richard Branson. Like Mychael Knight, Barge received a bit of television fame herself when her designs won the "Today Show Throws a Wedding" competition in 2003.

Atlanta’s Hyatt Regency Hotel Wants Polaris to Be A VIP Lounge???

Atlanta is HOT for restaurant lounges! People in metro Atlanta KNOW how to party and exclusive lounges are the hottest spots. I won’t even mention the after hour lounges; the party never stops in Atlanta. All I will say on that one is if YOU liked Fever’s after hours you are going to LOVE their next spot! Stay tuned for more info later on that.

Well, the Hyatt Regency hotel wants in on some hot Atlanta lounge scene action. I can not stress how HOT Atlanta is!!

According to an article by Reach Trubey in the Atlanta Business Chronicle:

“Polaris, the blue-domed restaurant that once was the highest point in downtown Atlanta, could soon gleam again, although perhaps in another form.

Officials at the Hyatt Regency hotel are considering a rebirth for the once-iconic restaurant, and could turn it into a club lounge for VIPs and frequent guests.

The intent is to redesign Polaris as a Regency Club Lounge for Hyatt Gold Passport members. Depending on the final scope of the project, sources said it could cost about $2 million to renew Polaris, which was shuttered in the summer of 2004.

Hospitality is an $11.4 billion industry for the city and the 1,260-room Hyatt is one of the city’s leading convention hotels.”

Atlanta is leading the world in luxury!

Tout Ensemble! Goodbye to Atlanta’s Miss Nancy Rhodes

Atlanta loved and knew her best for her etiquette, a southern lady of charm. Nancy Rhodes was first class and liked to be called Miss Nancy.

According to the AJC, Mrs. Rhodes, 96, died Dec. 28 at St. Anne’s Terrace retirement home in Buckhead. The funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at West View Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at St. Philips Cathedral. H.M. Patterson, Spring Hill Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

One of Nancy Rhodes’ favorite compliments was to tell a lady she looked “tout ensemble,” a French phrase meaning that someone was well put-together and making a good impression. For 32 years, she advised Atlanta debutantes on proper etiquette. She also taught a class called “Gracious Living” at the Westminster Schools.
